Little Free Diverse Libraries
"The only thing you absolutely have to know is the location of the library." -Albert Einstein
At 904WARD, we believe that people are more likely to understand the experiences of others when they have exposure to the experiences of others. Books are a phenomenal way to introduce people to other cultures, identities, lifestyles, beliefs, and ways of thinking. Not only can we look through windows to see other people’s experiences, but books also provide mirrors to see our own stories reflected back to us.
We want to ensure that people across the greater Jacksonville region and across the state of Florida have access to diverse stories and opportunities to learn more about race, culture, and history. We also think it is crucial that our children also have access to stories that expose them to other experiences and also allow them to see themselves in literature. To do this, we are installing Little Free Diverse Libraries in communities across the city and across the state.
What Is a Little Free Diverse Library?
In partnership with Yellow House, we are installing public bookcases in communities that are filled with diverse stories for adults, teens, children, and early readers. The community can take a book to read and bring a book to share. We want to highlight stories and authors of color, creating a space where various stories are included. One shelf of the Little Free Diverse Libraries is filled with adult fiction and non-fiction, and the other shelf includes teen, children’s, and early childhood books.

Every library in Duval County will also include the following banned books for students:
